The Evolution of Gutter Protection

As with most products the initial concept is constantly being improved upon over time.  In this case the product is gutter protection.  In an effort to keep leaves and debris out of your gutters and to prevent damage caused by water and ice; some of the first gutter protectors were simple screens, plastic, or lightweight aluminum that you placed overtop your gutters.

Next came First-shingle unsupported protection, while this type of gutter protection does have a multi-tiered cap it still lacks structural support and can ultimately damage your roof.  This lack of support can also lead to ice damming which can lead to wood rot, mold problems and interior damage.

One-piece gutter protection was the next trend.  The idea was to replace existing gutters with an all-encompassing system.  The product proved to be extremely costly while at the same time causing the same problems as the less expensive products such as ice damming and less support.  In addition to these problems their awkward design (in order to accommodate small bucket size) can cause the gutter to pull away from the fascia, they have a low capacity (which leads to overflow), not to mention an unsightly and awkward appearance.

Two-piece gutter protection systems are not much different than the one-piece systems. It is another expensive option and is prone to many if not all of the same problems as the one-piece. The only major difference between the two is that with this system you have to purchase two pieces that fit together, rather than just one.

The Second-shingle supported gutter protection performs fairly well compared to those that came before it.  The main issue with this system is the fact that it is attached to your roof using a screw, causing damage that could ultimately void your roof warranty.  This newest development in gutter protection seems to be the most efficient thus far.  It seems that companies now are working with the foundation of this system and further developing it and improving the problems that still exist, and so the evolution of gutter protection continues.
