Performance Ratings
The NFRC is responsible for determining a window’s overall performance, allowing consumers to make an educated decision before they purchase new windows or doors. Each window and door is rated on its ability to keep warm air out in the summer and cold air out in the winter and how well it resists wind and condensation. This rating system ultimately determines the energy efficiency of a product.
The two most important values to look for are U-Value (also commonly called U-Factor) and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The lower the U-value, the greater a window’s resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value. SHGC is a number between 0 and 1 that indicates the fraction of heat from the sun entering through your window. The lower this rating is, the less amount of heat allowed to pass through you windows. This rating is important in the warmer months. A low rating results in a cooler him during the summer.
